XIA Shucai, a 63-year-old man, was a resident of Dongdagezhuang Village, Zhongjing Town, Laiyang City, Shandong Province.

On December 9, 2000, he was captured at Laixi Railway Station on his way to Beijing to appeal the persecution of Falun Dafa, and he was taken back to Zhongjing. The town government forced his family to pay a fine of 2,000 yuan (roughly 4 months' income for an average worker in China) and asked him to write a statement renouncing his practice of Falun Gong.

XIA Shucai went on a hunger strike to protest against the illegal detention and beating. He was tortured many times during the hunger strike, and he passed away on the night of December 22, 2000.

According to an eyewitness’ account, at the time of his death, XIA Shucai was extremely thin; his eyes were still open; the cuts and wounds on his face had turned into scars; the flesh and skin on his right hand were torn apart; there were bloodstains on his stomach and thighs, and bruises could be seen on his collar bone.

In fear that its evil deeds would be exposed, the Zhongjing town government transferred XIA Shucai's body to Laiyang police station. Moreover, the town government sent the three Dafa practitioners who were jailed together with XIA Shucai to an unkown place.

According to incomplete statistics, within the past five years beginning on July 20, 1999, more than 3160 practitioners have been verified as being tortured to death in over 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities. However, according to the government's official internal statistics, the actual number of practitioners who died after being arrested had reached 1,600 by the end of 2001. In addition, there are at least 6,000 Falun Gong practitioners who have been illegally sentenced to prison. Over 100,000 practitioners have been sentenced to forced labor camps. Thousands of practitioners have been forcefully sent to psychiatric hospitals to be tortured with injections that are damaging to the central nervous system. Large groups of Falun Gong practitioners have been forcefully sent to local brainwashing classes, where they have been subjected to both physical and mental torture. Many more practitioners have been severely beaten and had large sums of money extorted from them by so-called "law-enforcement officials." When large numbers of Falun Gong practitioners are beaten to death, injured, and their families are broken up, when they have to leave home and go from place to place because of the persecution, millions of Falun Gong practitioners' families, relatives, good friends and colleagues are also implicated and brainwashed to varying degrees. Listed below are the names of the Falun Gong practitioners who have died from torture, and a brief description of their cases. Hopefully, these dreadful experiences and agonizing scenes will arouse consciences and stir hearts all over the world.

Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa (about), is a practice of meditation and exercises with teachings based on the universal principle of "Truthfulness-Compassion-Tolerance." Practiced in over 50 countries world-wide, Falun Gong has roots in traditional Chinese culture. With government estimates of as many as 100 million practicing Falun Gong, China's Communist leader Jiang Zemin outlawed the peaceful practice in July 1999 (report). Since that time, Jiang Zemin's regime has intensified its propaganda campaign to turn public opinion against the practice while imprisoning, torturing and even murdering those who practice it. The Falun Dafa Information Center has verified details of 2829 deaths (reports / sources) since the persecution of Falun Gong in China began in 1999. In October 2001, however, Government officials inside China reported that the actual death toll was well over 1,600. Expert sources now estimate that figure to be much higher. Hundreds of thousands have been detained, with more than 100,000 being sentenced to forced labor camps, typically without trial.
